Peter Rutherford, M.B. BS, Ph.D, FRCP

Vice President, Medical Affairs

Peter Rutherford, M.D., Ph.D., is vice president of global medical affairs. As such, he leads the company’s medical team and is responsible for clinical research, scientific engagement, medical communications and global patient safety.

Previously, Rutherford held positions of increasing responsibility at Baxter International from 2007-2015, then returning to the company in 2021 as the vice president of kidney care global medical affairs. Upon his return, he played a key role in the company’s collaborative efforts with clinicians and healthcare professional and patient organizations to support kidney patients' unique needs.

Rutherford also held key clinical leadership roles at IQVIA and Vifor Pharma. Prior to joining industry, he was an NHS Trust medical director and was a senior lecturer in nephrology at the University of Wales College of Medicine, Wrexham, Wales where he developed a large home dialysis program.

Rutherford received a bachelor’s degree, qualified in medicine and earned a doctorate in Medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He trained in nephrology and internal medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and as a traveling fellow at Yale University, School of Medicine.
